The 2001 Corvette continued as a two-door, two-passenger performance sports car available
in three trims ranging from a base coupe to a convertible to an all-new Z06 higher-performance
edition.
At new-model-introduction time the coupe was equipped with a standard 350-cid 350-hp Chevrolet LS1 V-8 and four-speed automatic transmission.
A six-speed manual transmission was optional.
The Corvette Z06 included a 350-cid 385-hp Chevrolet LS6 V-8 and a unique six-speed manual transmission with overdrive.
This transmission featured more aggressive gearing for quicker acceleration and more usable torque at various speeds.
A built-in temperature-sensing unit was designed to alert the driver when transmission oil temperature got too high.
The Goodyear tires on the Z06 were made especially for it and were an inch wider than standard tires front and rear, but 23 pounds lighter.
The Z06 also featured a windshield and backlight made of thinner glass (because it did not feature the heavier glass used in the HUD system) and a titanium exhaust system to reduce its weight by nearly 40 pounds.

The CS convertible came with all of the same standard equipment, plus a power antenna.
The Z06 was basically equipped like the coupe, but with AM/FM cassette and radio optional and the automatic transmission was not available.

HISTORICAL NOTES
Automobile Magazine awarded the 2001 Corvette Z06 "Automobile of the Year" honors.
In its August 2000 issue, Road and Track said of the Z06 "The Empire has struck back in big numbers."
That same month, a Motor Trend test driver tested a Z06 and reported, "I did things in the Corvette I wouldn't consider in the Cobra R, things that would result in an off-track excursion and maybe a big crash in the Dodge RT/10:"
The Automobile Journalists Association of Canada gave the Corvette Z06 its 2001 "Car of the Year Award" for best new sports and performance car.
