How to Become a Truck Driver: The Ultimate Guide

A lot of people will say a dream job is the one that gives you financial stability and some travel. But this dream job is actually way easier to get than most people realize!

Long haul truck driving lets you travel all over the country, and it provides a steady stream of income while you do it.

Here’s everything you need to know on your journey to become a truck driver.

Step 1: Are You Eligible to Become a Truck Driver?

Becoming a trucker is pretty simple. But before you can begin this process, there are some requirements you need to meet.

According to Department of Transport regulations, you need to be at least 21 years old to become an interstate truck driver. While there are ways you can get your license if you’re younger than 21, not many companies will hire you if you’re unable to drive out of state.

Since the job is all about driving, you also need to have a spotless driving record. When it comes to finding employment, a good work history is always important.

Step 2: Get Your Commercial Driver’s License

A commercial driver’s license (CDL) is required to drive trucks. To get this license, you enroll at a truck driving school. This involves classroom time and driving with an instructor.

The complete training period usually lasts between four and seven weeks, depending on the program and the class of the license you’re training for. There are different classes of CDL you can get, but the popular option is a Class A CDL. It’s the license that lets you drive a tractor trailer, which is the most in-demand license.

Getting your license also requires you to pass drug and alcohol tests. Once you’ve got your license, there are regular health checks you need to keep passing to renew your license.

Once you’re through training and have your license, the hard part is over.

Step 3: Find the Right Truck Driving Company

Now that you’re qualified, you’re on your way to becoming a long haul truck driver

Due to the pandemic and increase in eCommerce, the transportation industry is booming. This means there is a big demand for truck drivers, and lots of options for you to choose from.

There is a lot of screening, and even more training, required to find employment. Be patient, and you should find something that works for you. Driving a truck is a stable job with lots of benefits, so it’s good to take the time to find what’s right for you.
