Essential Tips for First-Time Drivers

Driving for the first time is exciting, yet scary. It’s always a bit scary when you try something new for the first time and driving is no exception. However, owning a driver’s license is essential.

With your own license, you’ll be able to free yourself of any dependence you once had on others. You can now take yourself wherever you’d like to go at any time. The feeling of freedom is amazing, but the most important thing will always be your safety.

To ensure you’re always driving safely, continue reading below for several tips for first time drivers!

1. Ensure that You’re Comfortable

One of the first things you need to do before you even start the car is to ensure that you’re comfortable. Not only do you need to be comfortable with driving in that very moment, but you need to be physically comfortable as well.

Check your mirrors and align them all properly so that you can see out of them without a struggle. Then, adjust your seat to the right height and length from the pedals. Once you feel that you’re good to go, you can then put your seatbelt on and move on to the next step!

2. Eliminate All Distractions

Now that you’re ready to start driving, you need to eliminate all distractions. Even the most experienced drivers can wind up in accidents because of common distractions. Before you start your car, turn your cell phone on silent.

This will prevent you from looking at it while driving if it happens to ring. You should even consider turning it off completely if you feel that you’ll be too tempted to look at it. When needing to use your phone, be sure to pull over into a safe place before texting or calling.

3. Know the Rules of the Road

Knowing the rules of the road is another important part of driving safely. You should be aware of all the rules before driving for the first time. This includes using your brights, roundabout rules, yield sign rules, and more.

If you don’t have an understanding of these rules before driving, you could end up in a stressful situation. To avoid any panic behind the wheel, know what to do in all scenarios before they happen.

4. Take Your Time

Always take your time. Never feel rushed to hit the gas pedal when a light turns green or to slam on your breaks when coming to a stop. Give yourself enough time to ease into both situations.

When you see a car in front of you hitting their breaks, be sure to let off your gas and begin to hit your breaks as well. Just remember to ease into it. The only time you want to step on your breaks hard is when you must hit the breaks fast to avoid an accident or another situation.
