- a 68-degree windshield angle
- new aluminum wheels
- new tires
- composite body panels that were resistant to minor impacts and rust
- new instrumentation
- a locking glove box

- A new 3.4-liter V-6 was standard on the Firebird and an LT1 5.7-liter V-8 was standard on Formula and Trans Am models.
- A six-speed manual transmission was also standard on Formulas and Trans Ams.
- Other new features included
- advanced four-wheel antilock brakes (standard on Firebirds with four-wheel disc brakes including all Formulas and Trans Ams)
- dual front airbags
- A keyless entry system was now available on all Firebirds and standard on Trans Ams
