My name is John Barach, Sr.
Donna and I have been married for over 40 years. We have two children.
My daughter, an avid cyclist, lives in Red Deer, Alberta.
My son, his wife, and daughter live in Grande Prairie, Alberta.
MY FIRST BIRTH
I was a miracle baby. Born with spina bifida (a defect in the closure of the
vertebral canal allowing the meninges to protrude), I was not expected to live. My head grew
to the size of a pumpkin. My mother was told that there was no hope for me. However, there was
a doctor in Nelson, BC (where I was born) who had been thinking about spina bifida cases and
he thought that performing a particular operation might bring some help to me. He cut open the
small of my back and apparently removed two vertebrae, drained the fluid, and sewed me back up.
This operation was successful and I became the first person to survive from such a serious
case of spina bifida. I believe I am the oldest surviving person with this degree of spina
bifida.
MY SECOND BIRTH:
I became a Christian at the age of 20 by entering into a personal
relationship with Jesus Christ. Someday I will finish this web page & tell
you how my life changed for the better and I have never regretted it.
MY EDUCATION:
I obtained my bachelor's degree in 1967 and my masters in 1979.
For 6 years I worked as a partsman in a motorcycle shop. For 15 years I was a professor
in a college.
MY INTERESTS:
Like the jack of all trades, I have an interest in a variety of
subjects: theology, mathematics, science, programming computers, classic
automobiles, motorcycles, reading, history, etc.
