Athabasca Falls to Sunwapta Falls
- 32 km (253 km)
Athabasca Falls is one of the major attractions of the Icefield Parkway.
Lockup your bike and take a short walk to the falls where a surge of water is
forced between a narrow gap and over a rock step. There are washrooms here for
your convenience. At the far end of the parking lot there is a pump to fill your
bottle with mountain fresh water.
- 33 km (252 km)
Athabasca Falls Hostel.
- 36 km (249 km)
Mt. Kerkeslin Campground.
- 39 km (246 km)
Goat Viewpoint, a natural mineral lick where you will
likely spot Mountain goats. Between Athabasca Falls and this viewpoint, you should
see elk and other game in the early morning.
- 43 km (242 km)
Goat picnic area.
- 49 km (236 km)
Ranger Creek group tenting. Now you will encounter a
long climb followed by a long downhill.
- 56 km (229 km)
There is a short turn-off to Sunwapta Falls. Take the
15 minute walk to the lower falls. You will find the walk refreshing because in
walking you use different muscles. Accommodation is available at the Sunwapta Falls
Bungalows and Gift Shop (write them at Box 97, Jasper, AB T0E 1E0 Canada). For the
next 31 km, the cycling is pleasant. On one side is the Athabasca River and on the
other a forest of lodgepole pine.
