Acronym for Total Base Number. ASTM D2896. Measured in mg. The TBN of KOH is the amount or ability of the product needed to neutralize an acidic solution through reverse titration. In a motor oil, this is a property which allows the oil to neutralize acids from combustion that would otherwise degrade the oil.
