SB
- An API designation for older minimum-duty gasoline
engines operated under such mild conditions that only minimum protection is given. Oils of this designation
have been used since the 1930s and provide mild antiscuff capability and resistance to oil oxidation and
bearing corrosion. It was a replacement for SA designated oil and was replaced by
SC oil. SB oil should not be used in any modern engines. Instead, use the most
current SM designated oil.
